Choosing the Best Credit Cards

There are lots of good reasons to use credit cards if you know how to use them responsibly.  It is possible to get a lot of debt with them, but if you only use them only when necessary and you pay the balance in full each month, you can do very well with them.  You can build your credit, earn points and rewards, and pay for things much faster and easier.  Here are a few simple tips to help you choose the best card cards.

First, you need to decide what your objectives are when making credit card comparisons.  Different people will have different uses for them.  For example, someone who drives a lot might want to use gas credit cards where someone with poor credit will need to find bad credit credit cards.

If you are trying to build credit and you have no credit to start, you may want to start with a secured credit card.  These are guaranteed acceptance because you aren’t actually borrowing money to start.  You put down a balance, often about $300 to $500 or so, and that is your credit limit.  You pay an annual fee and interest if you don’t pay off your balance as usual.  After a year usually you will be offered a real card if you have payed your debt consistently and have proven yourself.

If you spend a lot of money in particular areas, you can get a card in that area to get rewards.  For example, if you drive a lot, you can get a gas card where you earn cash back on the gas you buy.  If you travel a lot, you can get a traveler’s card where you get free flyer miles.  If you are a student, get a student card and you will have an easier time getting approved.

Make sure that whatever card you get, you pay in time and try to pay off the balance each month.  This will allow you to get a lower interest rate, maximize your rewards, and if you pay off the balance, it won’t cost you anything unless you have an annual fee.  The better cardholder you are, the more perks you will get in time.
